ASUS X99-A II Review

The ASUS X99-A II was a leading motherboard when it was launched in 2014. Since then, however, technology has rapidly improved and the X99-A II slowly disappeared into obscurity.

We thought it would be a great idea to pull the ASUS X99-A II back from the shadows and see whether it’s stood the test of time. While not the latest board on the block, the ASUS X99-A II sports many of the bells and whistles you would expect to see from a modern mid-range motherboard.

ASUS X99-A II (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

ASUS is known for keeping the look and feel of their motherboards consistent and the X99-A II is no exception. The X99-A II has the classic monochromatic theme that we saw with both the X99 and Z170 boards.

That being said, the ASUS X99-A II has a few differences. The first is the heatsink, which has been clothed in a silver and white coating instead of the usual black and white.

Much like the other boards in their line, ASUS filled the X99-A II with as many features as they could. The X99-A II sports a massive LGA2011 V3 CPU socket as well as eight DDR4 DIMM slots.

This is impressive given what other boards in a similar range offer.

ASUS added nine ATX mounting holes. This is ideal for builders since it allows you to apply pressure to the board when you mount it. There’s no more worrying that your board will bend.

On the underside of the board, you’ll find clusters of surface-mounted features, a second ASUS TPU chip, and some pretty LEDs for under-board lighting. If you’re someone who values aesthetics, you’ll get a kick from the style of this board.

Features and Specifications

The ASUS X99-A II sports Realtek ALC1150 audio with amazing SNR (signal-to-noise ratio). The board also comes with the standard USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, M.2, U.2, and Gigabit LAN.

The board’s 5-way optimization improves CPU performance and increases EPU efficiency. This allows users to disable add-on ICs and manage the cooling system using the advanced fan controllers.

The ASUS X99-A II comes with an optional fan extension card which is great if you’re an overclocking enthusiast or gamer since it will help prevent your PC from overheating.

Additionally, the board features fully digital power delivery components which drastically increase stability. All of the standard ASUS Q-Features are included.

There’s RGB lighting across the entire board, which we thought was a nice aesthetic touch.

In terms of tech, the ASUS X99-A II has aged noticeably. However, when we tested this board out, we were impressed with how well it held up.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s by no means a premium piece of hardware. But if you’re looking for an affordable board with decent features, you can’t go wrong with the ASUS X99-A II

If you’re looking for something more flashy, we suggest you check out the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 motherboard or the ASUS Strix Z270e

BIOS

The ASUS X99-A II has two main BIOS screens. These are the EZ Mode BIOS and the Main BIOS screen.

With the EZ mode, you can set the XMP RAM configurations, choose the boot priority, and change the fan curve of the CPU. This menu displays general system information.

The advanced mode shows the main screen and lets you access the AI Tweakers section. The features in this section include the DRAM timing control and the External DIGI+ power control.

Overclocking enthusiasts will have a lot of fun with these settings since it directly affects the overclocking abilities of the board.

Overall, the BIOS is adequate and should satisfy most PC users.

Customer Reviews

Here is what customers have had to say about the ASUS X99-A II:

“I just did a build with the ASUS X99-A II and the 6800k with an NH-D15. So far, it’s working well. I have it running at around 4.5 GHz at 30c idle and pushing into the 50s if you run prime 95 long enough.

The board itself is great and I have no issues with it. The UEFI has come a long way in 4 years.

My last board was an ASRock and had the worst BIOS layout and didn’t seem to like having a mouse so the ASUS X99-A II is a definite improvement.

It has RGB LEDs on board so you can throw a tiny rave party in your case if you want.”

“If you already have an X99, there’s no point in getting the ASUS X99-A II. This motherboard is for people who have yet to experience the X99 platform.

The ASUS X99 is a solid motherboard for the price. I have an original X99-A with a 5820k running at 4.2 GHz w/ 1.184v. I bought it in 2014.”
