ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

The ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 motherboard hides an excellent range of features beneath its military-grade shielding and thermal armor.

It comes with Intel’s new Z270 chipset. That means it supports Intel’s Kaby Lake 7000 series CPUs. This new Z270 chipset also supports Optane SSDs and helps gamers push their DDR4 Ram slightly faster.

In our ASUS brand review, we mentioned that they love to push the limits of what motherboards can do, which is especially true with the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 motherboard.

ASUS included all the essentials, such as 4x DDR4 slots, several expansion slots, and new features such as a dedicated onboard processor that measures temperature and fan speeds.

The ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 is an excellent value-for-money motherboard, fit for use with Intel’s reliable i7 processors.

If you are looking for an even sturdier TUF series motherboard, you would love our ASUS TUF Z390-Plus Gaming review.

Supported Processors

Boasting an LGA 1151 socket, the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 supports Intel 7th and 6th Generation Core i7, i5, and i3 processors, along with LGA 1151 compatible Pentium and Celeron CPUs.

Our ASUS TUF B450M-Plus Gaming review is jam-packed with info on an equally great motherboard for the gamers that would choose to instead go with an AMD TUF series motherboard.

RAM

You will find 4x DDR4 DIMMs on this motherboard. The ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 can be maxed out at 64GB of system memory and supports overclocking speeds of up to 3866MHz.

We find that ASUS SafeSlot technology protects the DIMMs from being damaged. This is just one small way in which ASUS increased this motherboard’s toughness.

Peripherals

The ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 comes with everything a serious gamer would need. In terms of expansion slots, ASUS gave us:

  • 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16 or dual-mode at x8 bandwidth)
  • 1x PCIe 3.0 x16 (max at x4 bandwidth mode)
  • 3x PCIe 3.0 x1

To connect all of our storage devices, ASUS installed a decent amount of ports. We find 6x SATA 6Gb/s ports and 2x M.2 connectors.

As for connecting to external devices, ASUS included 2x USB 3.1 ports, 6x USB 3.0 ports, and 8x USB 2.0 ports for connecting to external devices.

With the availability of dual Intel Gigabit Ethernet connectors, the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 motherboard keeps your data moving swiftly and efficiently.

Graphics

Gamers will find an industry-standard amount of video output ports on the TUF Z270 Mark 1. This motherboard has 1x DisplayPort 1.2 and 1x HDMI 1.4 port. You will see that the HDMI port supports a standard maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 30Hz.

Unlike other Z270 chipset motherboards, the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 supports NVIDIA 2-Way SLI and AMD 3-Way CrossFireX Technology.

Audio

Audiophiles and dedicated gamers will be more than pleased with the great Realtek S1220A audio codec installed on this motherboard. This quality audio codec provides crystal-clear HD sound across 8 channels.

Specially designed audio shielding and an internal audio amplifier on the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 produce high-quality audio capabilities.

Aesthetics

Like all TUF series motherboards, the Z270 Mark 1 comes in the familiar rugged, black and silver military camo scheme. The plenty of thermal shields and heat sinks, and yes, there are plenty of those on this motherboard, all add to create the impression of a quality, sturdy, military-styled motherboard.

We find that the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 motherboard lacks the fantastic RGB headers, as seen in our popular ASUS Strix Z270E review. Even though the TUF Z270 Mark 1 lacks RGB headers, it does have some minimal RGB zones.

Users can control the RGB zones with the bundled ASUS Aura software. This software lets you control and tweak compatible peripherals such as graphics cards and fans with built-in LEDs.

Battle-ready Armor

It would be impossible to write a comprehensive review of the ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 without mentioning its superior components.

More than just a brand name, it seems like ASUS did install several industrial features on this motherboard to increase its overall toughness.

The TUF Fortifier is a rugged reinforced backplate that won’t buckle under the weight of heavy CPU coolers and graphics cards.

This motherboard even comes with 5x unique Dust Defenders to help protect your PCIe slots from dust and other airborne particles.

5/5 Stars

“The ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 1 motherboard is great and has an easy-to-use BIOS. My only gripe is that this motherboard is shorter than the standard ATX form factor but bigger than a micro ATX. Instead of the standard 9.6 inches width, you get a motherboard that is 9.2 inches wide, making installation frustrating.”
