ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

The ROG line of ASUS motherboards primarily caters to power users. However, the Strix Z390-E doesn’t quite fit that bracket. This motherboard has an almost entry-level price, yet it carries over many of the gamer-orientated ROG goodies.

No doubt you’ve read our ASUS brand review. ASUS is a much-loved brand that constantly seeks out new ways to redefine the motherboard manufacturing industry. With its surprisingly refreshing attitude, the ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard is one of the boards that keep ASUS several steps ahead of the competition.

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming is an exceptional value-for-money motherboard. It pushes Intel’s Core i9 processors as much, if not more than the more expensive Z390 chipsets on the market.

This board comes with all the essentials with 4x DDR4 slots and 3x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, and onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Users can optimize complex settings, such as fan control, networking, and performance with a single click. Even overclocking has been made simple with the ASUS AI software suit.

Supported Processors

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard comes with an Intel LGA 1151 socket. This socket supports Intel’s 8th and 9th generation Core processors.

It’s essential to find a motherboard that won’t throttle the Core i9’s tremendous power. The price for these popular processors is constantly dropping and more people are beginning to incorporate them into their builds.

The Z390-E Gaming motherboard is one of the few motherboards capable of supporting your processor’s total Turbo Boost ratio. With no throttling and excellent overclocking, the Strix Z390-E is a perfect Intel-based gaming motherboard.

If you aren’t a fan of Intel processors, read our ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming review for an AMD alternative motherboard that is just as good as the Strix Z390-E.

RAM

The motherboard has 4x DDR4 DIMMs for RAM. This supports a total of 64GB of system memory.

All 4 DIMMs come with the exclusive ASUS ROG T-Topology circuit design. This design provides you with excellent memory-overclocking.

You can unlock the full potential of your DDR4 RAM, reaching speeds up to 4266MHz. This is thanks to the reduced coupling noise and signal reflection from the T-Topology.

Peripherals

ASUS equipped the ROG Strix Z390-E with enough expansion slots to make any gamer grin. We’re treated to:

  • 3x PCIe 3.0 x1
  • 1x PCIe 3.0 x16
  • 1x PCIe 3.0 x16 (x4 Bandwidth)
  • 1x PCIe 3.0 x16 (x8 Bandwidth)

ASUS included 6x SATA 6Gb/s ports and 2x M.2 connectors which allows you to connect more than enough storage devices

As for USB ports, there’s a nice variety on the motherboard. We find 4x USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, 6x USB 2.0 ports, and 4x USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports with 1x USB 3.1 Gen 2 front-panel connector ports.

Graphics

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard comes with the standard number of video outputs. This motherboard has 1x DisplayPort 1.2 and 1x HDMI 1.4 port. While the HDMI port supports a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 30Hz, the Strix Z390-E truly shines with external graphics cards.

Dedicated gamers will be happy to know that this motherboard supports NVIDIA 2-Way SLI and AMD 3-Way CrossFireX Technology. This allows you to hook up 2 graphics cards at once and get the processing power of each.

Audio

We were happy to learn that ASUS didn’t downgrade the fantastic ROG audio to cut costs. The excellent ROG SupremeFX S1220 audio codec provides crystal-clear HD sound across 8 channels.

A sturdy Texas Instruments Op-Amp further bolsters the audio, allowing for high audio gains and low distortion.

Just like we saw in our ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero review, the Strix Z390-E is packed with ASUS’s leading Sonic Radar III and Sonic Studio III software. These two features perfectly round out ASUS’s audio offering, giving you plenty of versatility and flexibility.

Aesthetics

A primary trait of all ASUS ROG motherboards is the ability to customize your new rig endlessly. ASUS continued this prestigious ROG tradition by including many useful customization features to the ROG Strix Z390-E.

With the ASUS Aura software, you’re in control of the RGB LEDs. This software lets you enjoy the creative freedom of choosing from 9 lighting modes. It also allows you to control the RGB strips attached through the 2x onboard RGB headers and the single addressable RGB header.

ASUS included special 3D mounts to offer even more customizability with the Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard. Users can connect 3D-printed accessories, such as cable covers, nameplates, or fan holders to these 3D mounts.

Networking

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E comes with both onboard Bluetooth V5 and Wi-Fi, which sets it apart from some of its siblings like the ASUS ROG Strix B350-F Gaming. The Wi-Fi is run through Intel’s capable Wireless-AC 9560 chip. A reliable Intel I219V chip powers the standard Gigabit Ethernet port to seamlessly connect your gaming rig to your network.

Conclusion

When we started this review, we took note of the low price of the motherboard. We expected that ASUS had cut a lot of the standard ROG features to lower costs, but luckily this isn’t the case.

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard is what you would expect from a ROG motherboard.

With its beautiful aesthetics wrapped around a true gaming-motherboard core, this is one of our favorite boards from ASUS. It may be cheaper than other Z390 motherboards, but in terms of performance, this spunky ATX motherboard won’t let you down.

5/5 Stars

“Installing the ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard into my case was easy enough. The SATA ports, however, are located underneath my graphics card. This means that every time I want to remove or add another storage drive into my system, I first need to remove my graphics card. Otherwise, I have had only pleasant experiences with this motherboard.”
