ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Review

If you’ve been eyeing ASUS’s new 2nd generation AMD Zen products, you’ve no doubt considered the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming motherboard.

This new addition to the Strix family combines performance with stylish looks. It also comes in an affordable package.

However, on paper, it may not seem as good as other X470 motherboards. After all, it lacks onboard Wi-Fi and comes with no heat sinks over the M.2 connectors. What else could this motherboard be hiding?

ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

ASUS has long been one of the most sought-after motherboard manufacturers. They offer gaming-ready boards with the famous ROG brand.

The Strix B450-F is a great candidate for inclusion into this top-tier. We think this motherboard is adequately equipped with features for its price. The popular B450 chipset allows for significant overclocking while making a solid foundation on which to build an affordable gaming rig.

This motherboard is an excellent improvement on the older ASUS ROG Strix B350-F Gaming board. It has a better layout, which helps keep the system running at optimal temperatures while also making the installation quicker.

However, it isn’t as powerful as the more expensive ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero that has a slight edge over the B450-F Gaming in terms of clock speed and memory capacity.

Supported Processors

The designers of ASUS ROG motherboards love AMD processors, and for a good reason. AMD processors have made a name for themselves as the top choice for hardcore gamers, as they reliably deliver solid performance.

The B450-F Gaming is a great choice to get the best performance out of your AMD AM4 socket, 3rd generation Ryzen processors. The B450-F will also please anyone with older 2nd and 1st generation AM4 processors as they too can make use of the fantastic B450-F board.

RAM

Like most ROG motherboards, the B450-F comes with 4x DDR4 DIMMS. The four slots allow users to install an impressive 128GB of RAM on their gaming system. The DIMM slots’ design has also been improved, giving a more secure fit for the memory modules.

This snug fit will reduce general coupling noise on the memory channels. This results in higher frame rates and improved overall system performance.

Peripherals

The ASUS ROG B450-F comes with 8x SATA ports and 2x M.2 ports. Unlike the more expensive ROG motherboards, the M.2 ports don’t have heat shields on them. This leaves the board prone to damage, especially if you enjoy overclocking your rig.

We were also pleased with the 3x PCIe 3.0 x16 and the 3x PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. The expansion slots would be great to use in a multi graphics setup or adding a Wi-Fi expansion card. Wi-Fi is something that this motherboard sorely lacks.

ASUS relies on a capable Intel I211-AT Gigabit LAN controller to connect your new rig to a network. ASUS and ROG LANGuard technology protects the LAN port against surges and static.

We love the move to the 3.1 USB ports. ASUS decided to install 8x USB 3.1 ports and 6x USB 2.0 ports on this motherboard. That’s ample connectivity to customize the gaming rig of your dreams.

Graphics

While the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming has no onboard graphics, it has 3x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots for external graphics cards. The B450-F is excellent in a multi graphics environment. This board supports AMD 3-Way CrossFireX Technology.

If you use a Ryzen processor with integrated Vega graphics instead of an external graphics card, you’ll be happy to know that the B450-F comes with a DisplayPort and HDMI 2.0 port.

Audio

Like the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme, the B450-F Gaming board comes with some of the best sound around.

The great ROG SupremeFX S1220 audio codec is the conductor behind the crisp sound. It offers users HD-quality sound across a range of 8 channels.

Not one to do things in small measures, ASUS boosted the incredible sound with an onboard Texas Instruments op-amp. This amp allows for high audio gains with very low distortion.

Hardcore gamers will be pleased to know that ASUS included Sonic Studio III and Sonic Radar III software.

In short, the exceptional Sonic Studio III allows users to customize the motherboard’s audio settings. Your audio will always be tuned to precisely how you want it to be.

Hardcore gamers may already be aware of Sonic Radar III. This useful software provides gamers with an edge when it comes to locating their enemies in-game. No more sneak attacks on your flanks.

Aesthetics

The ASUS B450-F Gaming motherboard comes with a wide variety of fun customization features to truly make your gaming rig unique.

2x Aura 12 volt RGB Headers, along with the much-lauded Aura Sync software, allows you to spend hours tweaking the perfect lighting for your system.

The B450-F also comes with stylish, futuristic-looking heatsinks. You can customize them with the included stickers. You can either go vibrant with the neo-cyberpunk sticker or go for a stealthy neutral sticker.

If you want to customize your motherboard with 3D-printed cable covers, nameplates, or fan holders, then this motherboard is ready for you.

ASUS is one of only a handful of motherboard manufacturers that realized the impressive customization that 3D printing technology could bring. That’s why they included dedicated 3D accessory mounts on the motherboard.

We saw in our ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming review that ASUS loves producing beautiful, unique motherboards. The B450-F is right up there with the best of them.

Gaming Features

The Republic of Gamers (ROG) motherboards are ASUS’s flagship gaming-focused product line. As such, any review of a ROG motherboard would be incomplete without mentioning the gaming-ready features that it may have.

Gamers can spend hours tweaking their system for maximum performance. ASUS helps with making optimization a simple, one-click process.

The 5-Way Optimization software offers a complete system optimization with one click. This advanced software feature perfectly consolidates ASUS ROG technology to provide gamers with improved, overclocked CPU performance. It also intelligently takes care of power savings, digital power control and looks after the system’s cooling.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming motherboard comes with all the superb features that gamers need. Whether you’re a budget-builder or want to grow your system with the latest technology, the B450-F has you covered.

We found that the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero gives it a good run for its money, but as a mid-tier, budget motherboard, the B450-F did not disappoint us.
