ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

If you read our ASUS brand review, you’ll know that ASUS is a reliable manufacturer that keeps delivering top-quality, high-end motherboards. We saw one of their greatest motherboards when we did our ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero review.

It’s easy to consider the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme as the best X299 motherboard on the market. While it’s pricier than most X299 motherboards, the Rampage VI Extreme delivers extreme overclocking and exceptional customization in one of the most attractive motherboards available.

With 8x DDR4 slots and 4x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, this motherboard is lightyears ahead of what we saw in our ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero review.

Supported Processors

The ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme motherboard supports the latest Intel Socket LGA 2066 processors. This motherboard is best used with the Core X-Series Processor 79xx or the 78xx Series Processors.

Overclocking your new processor is simple with the ASUS 5-Way Optimization. This clever piece of bundled software optimizes critical aspects of your system, such as overclocking, tuning, and cooling with a single clock.

RAM

Like what we saw in our ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme review, the ROG Rampage VI Extreme features an impressive 8x DDR4 DIMM slots. Each slot is capable of being overclocked to speeds up to 4200MHz.

The total system memory on the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme is 128GB.

Peripherals

Once again, ASUS did not disappoint us. They offer hardcore gamers a fantastic number of PCIe slots. On the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme motherboard, we have not 2, but 4x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots.

ASUS included 1 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. All the PCIe slots feature the new ASUS SafeSlot design. This design is a sturdy metal PCIe slot that protects your expensive graphics cards by providing easier installation and a snug fit.

We’re further treated to additional storage interfaces, such as dual M.2 PCIe slots with the help of ASUS’s new DIMM.2 solutions. There’s also an extra M.2 slot hidden under the chipset heatsink. 6x SATA 6Gb/s ports round off the storage interfaces on this motherboard.

To connect external devices, you have a selection of 10 USB ports. There are 2x USB 3.1 Generation 2 ports and 8x USB 3.1 Generation 1 ports.

Networking

The feature-rich ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme has some of the best networking capabilities we’ve ever seen on an X299 motherboard. It has an onboard 10G LAN that comes with LAN Guard and Intel Gigabit LAN. This embedded LAN has speeds of up to x10 that of standard Gigabit LAN.

To further add to its unique networking options, ASUS included an 802.11ad WiGig Wi-Fi controller with its GameFirst Technology. This Wi-Fi chip can run connections of up to 4.6Gb/s, giving you smoother streaming up to 4K UHD video.

Along with the fantastic, game-ready LAN and Wi-Fi on this motherboard, we’re further treated with onboard Bluetooth V4.1. There are plenty of networking options for this board, making it one of the most versatile in the ASUS range.

Graphics

As expected from an X299 motherboard, the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme has no onboard graphics. It does, however, have 4x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and supports NVIDIA 4-Way SLI and AMD 4-Way CrossFireX Technology. If you’ve got the gear, you can slot in up to 4 graphics cards unleashing the highest fidelity.

It is important to remember that if you are running a 28-LANE CPU, you will only get up to 3-Way SLI or 3-Way CrossFireX support.

Audio

Since the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme is a flagship board, we expect only the best gaming-ready audio, and once again, ASUS delivers. The ROG Rampage VI Extreme runs a powerful ROG SupremeFX S1220 audio codec that offers HD sound across 8 channels.

The front panel headphone output features a sturdy SABRE9018Q2C DAC/AMP capable of reaching -115dB THD+N to provide quality playback.

It comes bundled with ASUS’s Sonic Radar III and Sonic Studio III software in true ROG tradition. This nifty software was designed with audiophiles and gamers in mind.

The Sonic Radar III audio algorithm helps gamers with its pinpoint sound capability. A helpful ability that allows players to locate enemies in-game against a wall of noise.

Sonic Studio III is equally impressive. This software allows you to fine-tune your audio settings. Users can choose from different settings for each app or game they run, to different controls for each channel. With such customization options available, your audio will always be tuned to exactly how you want it to be.

Aesthetics

The ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme is easily the prettiest motherboard on the market. ASUS made it look like the data pathways are lit up like streetlights when the motherboard is powered. Combine that with the 2x RGB headers and 1x Addressable RGB header, and you can create some spectacular lighting effects.

Even the audio jacks light up in different colors. You can control all of the RGB lighting with the ASUS Aura software.

Another attractive feature is the new built-in OLED screen, named LiveDASH. This display gives you real-time statistics, or it can even be customized to display your animation or image.

With sleek-looking armor plates and hidden onboard RGB LEDs, you can easily customize your gaming motherboard with a wide variety of fans, lighting strips, and coolers.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme motherboard looks exquisite and is packed with features. It has one of the best RGB lighting systems on the market, and you can easily spend hours customizing every single light on the board.

Great aesthetics don’t mean that the ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme lacks power. This is a gaming-ready, top-of-the-range X299 motherboard bundled with all of your favorite ROG software utilities and extras.

It offers extreme overclocking capability, far better than what we saw with the ASUS ROG Strix Z390-e Gaming motherboard.

If you’re looking for an alternative motherboard that’s slightly less expensive but still strong enough to hold its own, have a look at our ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming review.
