ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero is an upgrade to the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero and scores points for its hardware capabilities and impressive feature list.

It uses a 12×9.6 inch ATX (advanced technology extended) form factor, which has become standard for most motherboards.

The Hero boards are hands down the best priced ASUS motherboards for the number of features included.

Hardware and Memory

Like the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, the Crosshair VII Hero sports a total of four DDR4 DIMM slots with a maximum capacity of 64GB. These slots are all reinforced to increase rigidity.

This gives you the ability to load up on RAM and keep your PC running at lightning speeds.

The board also includes two M.2 slots which make storage using SSDs efficient. However, the second M.2 slot doesn’t include a heatsink and this can lead to overheating and damage to the hardware.

Keeping It Cool

Ensuring that your motherboard stays cool will keep your PC going for longer. The ROG Crosshair VII Hero makes this an easy task with a total of eight fan headers.

These headers are part of ROG’s Water-Cooling Zone technology that’s used for both liquid and air cooling systems.

Although additional fans aren’t included in the package, the board supports extension cards for those wanting additional headers.

Rear I/O

The ROG Crosshair VII Hero has a built-in I/O shield, which sets it apart from the ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero.

This saves you from having to manually install the shield and risk damaging the ports.

Speaking of ports, the rear side of this motherboard has a total of ten USB ports and a single PS/2 port.

It supports USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and USB 3.1 – both generation one and two. The board also has support for both USB Type-A and C. With all these connectors, you’re unlikely to run out of space on your I/O.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming motherboard’s integrated Wi-Fi or Bluetooth features.

Buttons

The BIOS flashback and the clear CMOS buttons are included on the rear I/O. These are features that most companies try to incorporate into their motherboards.

These buttons allow you to reset or update your BIOS settings without having a CPU installed.

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero also includes onboard reset and power buttons.

Gamers, Get Ready

Although not as powerful as the higher-end ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme, the Crosshair VII Hero gives gamers a lot to be excited about.

This motherboard makes use of 3-way SLI and Crossfire technology across its PCIe ports. With 3-way SLI you can use up to three video cards simultaneously. This will massively boost the performance of your rig.

Not only will this technology reduce lag and frame drops but it will enable you to enjoy your favorite games at their highest settings.

Impressive Audio

Having an audio system dedicated to gamers shows the target audience that ASUS was aiming for.

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero has a SupremeFX S1220 codec based on the REALTEK LC1220.

It makes use of an ES9023 HD digital to audio converter, allowing for clear and crisp audio playback.

Another addition gamers will enjoy is the Sonic Radar, a technology that uses positional locations when outputting audio. This helps gamers who play competitive first-person shooters find exactly where those ominous footsteps are coming from.

If this top-of-the-range audio codec still doesn’t do it for you, the motherboard also includes five illuminated, gold-plated audio jacks and support for optical S/PDIF output.

BIOS and Overclocking

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero boasts a dual BIOS with EZ and Advanced modes that are packed with overclocking settings.

EZ mode displays typical BIOS settings split into tabs for fan control and storage configuration. The Advanced mode, however, is where the BIOS options shine.

This mode is for those who want to delve into serious overclocking and get the most from their motherboard.

Advanced mode includes the Tweakers Paradise tab, where all the overclocking options are available. This includes changing the voltage on separate components or creating user profiles.

Manually overclocking the motherboard using the BIOS settings reaches a stable 4.5GHZ.

RGB and Design

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII has a monochrome black design with addressable RGB headers.

Using the ASUS AURA Sync software, you can synchronize the LED lighting using a color wheel to select different lighting modes.

However, if RGB isn’t your style, ASUS included a Stealth mode to disable all LED lighting.

Customer Reviews

“It is safe to say that all my expectations have been exceeded after using this board. Not only was I able to overclock consistently but the VRM is so efficient that there is almost no heat. It also has a well-thought-out and easy-to-navigate BIOS, but I suggest ensuring that your BIOS is up to date. The amount of rear I/O ports makes it seem infinite, and it also includes USB Type C support. This motherboard gives you everything and more, don’t let the price scare you”

“This is a really solid board with one minor issue that prevented me from scoring it a 5. Lack of WIFI. Not having built-in Bluetooth or wifi brings down the score because I love everything else about it and it is filled with tons of features. But not having wifi? Seriously? Other than that, the motherboard is perfect. I did know about it not having wifi before I purchased it but I thought that they would release some attachments for it. I only now see that they made a version with built-in wifi.”
