ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

There is nothing small or simple about the ASUS ROG motherboard range. The ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero is an exceptional motherboard designed to push the boundaries of what AMD Ryzen processors are capable of.

With 4x DDR4 slots and 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, this board is easy to upgrade. It puts gamers in control. Users can optimize complex settings, such as fan control, networking, and performance with a single click.

However, it isn’t the only ROG motherboard worth keeping an eye on. We had fun with our ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme review.

Supported Processors

This heroic motherboard from ASUS builds on the rising popularity of AMD processors. The ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero supports AMD Ryzen processors, from the humble R3 1200 to the impressive R7 1800X.

We found that the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor in particular pairs well with this motherboard. You can unleash turbo speeds of up to 4GHz with the R7 1800X chip.

ASUS packed this gaming-ready board with its dedicated base-clock generator. This generator, designed for AM4 processors, makes overclocking easy. Some users reported speeds of up to 650MHz.

You also don’t have to worry about your system overheating. Your processor is kept cool with AM3 or AM4 coolers.

RAM

You will find 4x DDR4 DIMMs on this motherboard. The ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero is maxed out at 64GB of system memory.

The exclusive T-Topology circuit design on the DIMM slots provides gamers with excellent memory-overclocking. The new socket design reduces coupling noise and signal reflection, unleashing the full power of your DDR4 RAM.

Peripherals

ASUS equipped the Crosshair VI Hero with a whopping 6 expansion slots. You get 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 SafeSlots. The ASUS SafeSlot is a metal PCIe slot that protects your expensive graphics cards by providing better installation and a snug fit.

1x PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, and 3x PCIe 3.0 x1 slots with 1x M.2 Socket 3 (SATA mode), and 1x M.2 Socket 3 (SATA & PCI-E 3.0 x 4 mode) will ensure that you never run out of space. We also find 8 x SATA ports, each clocking in at 6Gb/s per port.

To connect external devices, you have a handy selection of USB ports. There are 8x USB 3.0 ports, 4x USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.1 Type-A port, and 1x USB 3.1 Type-C port.

An excellent addition to this list is the “Keybot” USB port. Connecting your keyboard to this port adds extra macro and function options. All of this is easily managed by the Keybot II software included with the system.

Graphics

While the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero has no onboard graphics, it offers 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots. ASUS left a much-appreciated gap between the two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots. This space gives enough room for bulky graphics cards to be installed next to each other.

Audio

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero board has some of the best audio available to gamers. A capable ROG SupremeFX S1220 audio codec is the mastermind behind it all. It offers users HD sound across 8 channels.

The audio is further boosted with an onboard Texas Instruments op-amp. This op-amp allows for high audio gain with low distortion.

We are also spoiled with ASUS’s Sonic Radar III and Sonic Studio III software. This feature-rich software was designed with audiophiles and gamers in mind.

The Sonic Radar III audio algorithm is also useful to gamers because it allows for pinpoint sound. A helpful ability to locate your enemies in-game despite the surrounding noise and chaos.

Sonic Studio III allows users to customize audio settings on different applications. With such customization, your audio will always be tuned to precisely how you want it.

Aesthetics

As a gamer, you know that modifying your rig is part of the fun. ASUS didn’t pull any punches when they added many useful customization features to the ROG Crosshair VI Hero.

With the ASUS Aura software, you are in control of the RGB LEDs. You can also control the RGB strips attached via the 2x onboard RGB headers. Aura lets you enjoy the creative freedom of 9 stunning lighting modes.

ASUS is one of the first motherboard manufacturers to leverage the future of 3D printed accessories. With dedicated 3D mounts, it’s easy to fit 3D-printed cable covers, nameplates, or an M.2 fan holder to your board.

Gaming Features

No review of the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI would be complete without discussing the treasure-trove of gaming-ready features that come with the motherboard.

Gamers will fall in love with the intelligent RAMCache II technology. This unique feature caches an entire disk drive, reducing load times for your favorite apps and games.

Another handy feature is Overwolf. This clever and unobtrusive overlay keeps you in the game and lets you stream, record, or browse the web at the same time.

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero even curtails lag. The built-in GameFirst IV optimization, along with an I211-AT Intel Ethernet Controller, will keep you lag-free while gaming online.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero motherboard is jam-packed with superb features. First-time buyers may feel overwhelmed by all the elements and may not even make use of all of them.

However, if you’re DIY-crazy and obsessed with overclocking, then this AMD Ryzen 7 motherboard should be on your wishlist. It’s the type of motherboard that you can customize and tinker with endlessly.
