ASUS Prime Z370-P Motherboard (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

It’s clear as day that the ASUS Prime Z370-P is a beginner motherboard aimed at new gamers on a tight budget. The board is cheap, but it has enough features to make it a good purchase.

Just like we saw in the ASUS Prime Z390-P review, the older Z370-P motherboard offers a competitive entry into the world of DIY PC building.

With the ASUS Prime Z370-P, we get a full-sized ATX form factor motherboard with 4x DDR4 RAM slots, 2x M.2 connectors, and average overclocking ability.

The ASUS Prime Z370-P lacks many of the exciting ASUS features we expect to find. It is, however, a reliable, sturdy motherboard that makes a solid foundation for your first computer.

Supported Processors

The ASUS Prime Z370-P motherboard boasts an Intel LGA 1151 socket. This popular socket supports Intel 9th and 8th generation Core CPUs and Pentium Gold and Celeron Processors.

New buyers should keep in mind that this motherboard only supports the latest Intel Coffee Lake processors and backward compatibility with older CPUs isn’t possible. You won’t be able to run popular, but outdated Skylake or Kaby Lake processors on the Z370-P.

RAM

There are 4x DDR4 DIMMs on the board. Gamers can run the latest resource-heavy games with a maximum system memory of 64GB across all four DIMMs.

ASUS included their ASUS OptiMem, which improves memory speeds. With all four slots populated, users can expect memory speeds of 4000MHz and beyond.

The inclusion of DDR4 RAM is a great bonus that will help keep your new build competitive. It’s a remarkable feature for a board of this price.

Peripherals

To expand your storage drives, ASUS included 2x M.2 Socket 3 ports and 4x SATA connectors. The SATA connectors run at an average of 6Gb/s and support RAID.

ASUS also equipped the Prime Z370-P with 4x PCIe x1 slots and 1x PCIe 3.0 x16 and 1x PCIe 3.0 x4 slots.

All the PCIe slots have the handy ASUS Safe Slot feature. This feature protects graphics cards during installation. The sturdier and firmer fit stops cards from bending or snapping during installation.

To help new builders connect external devices, ASUS included 8x USB 3.1 (Generation 1) ports and 6x USB 2.0 ports. There’s even a PS/2 port for older devices.

You’ll also enjoy the Realtek RTL8111H chip that provides users with Gigabit LAN. As with most ASUS motherboards, the ASUS LANGuard technology protects the LAN port against power surges and static electricity.

If you are looking for a motherboard with even more features, read our ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe review. The X299-Deluxe has loads of onboard features, such as Wi-Fi and exceptional overclocking ability.

Graphics

If you plan on using an Intel processor with integrated graphics, you’ll be pleased to find that ASUS installed 1x HDMI and 1x DVI-D output ports. The HDMI port can output a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 24Hz or 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz.

While this motherboard has 2x PCIe 3.0 slots and supports AMD two-way CrossFire, the second graphics card will only run at x4.

We recommend that new PC builders build this motherboard around one graphics card installed into the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot for optimal performance.

Audio

The ASUS Prime Z370-P comes with the cost-effective Realtek ALC887 8-Channel High Definition Audio Codec.

Premium Japanese audio capacitors provide warm, immersive sound with exceptional clarity and fidelity.

While we would have loved to see a newer audio codec, we can’t find fault with the ALC887.

The 3 audio jack also boasts orange LEDs to help beautify your new rig.

Aesthetics

The ASUS Prime Z370-P comes in the familiar ASUS black and silver. If you’re looking for a motherboard that has onboard RGB headers, then the ASUS Prime Z370-P is not the motherboard for you.

To save costs, ASUS removed the popular Aura Sync lighting. ASUS added several built-in orange LEDs. These LEDs, found by the audio jack and the PCIe brackets, can be switched off or set to play a breathing animation.

Overclocking

Despite its modest price, the ASUS Prime Z370-P offers users moderate overclocking capability. The motherboard also comes with ASUS’s reliable Overclocking Protection to ensure first-time DIY enthusiasts don’t damage their new setup.

Overclocking is made easy through the ASUS OC Tuner. To keep your system running at cooler temperatures, ASUS included a liquid cooling pump header.

DIY Features

No review of the ASUS Prime Z370-P would be complete without mentioning its helpful, easy-to-use DIY features.

The new DIY features will help budding enthusiasts feel more confident tweaking and adjusting their system. ASUS looks over them with its CrashFree BIOS 3, ASUS EZ Flash 3 utility, and the ASUS UEFI BIOS EZ Mode.

With the ASUS CPR (CPU Parameter Recall) feature, users can restore older parameters on the system. This feature is great for troubleshooting and even fine-tuning your new rig.

Other innovations, such as the ASUS Overvoltage Protection and ASUS DIGI+ VRM, ensure that components provide better power efficiency and stability.

Like all ASUS motherboards, the Prime Z370-P comes with the Asus 5x Protection III technology. 5x Protection III is a set of built-in safeguards that ensure their motherboards are reliable and offer gamers long-term durability.

Conclusion

The ASUS Prime Z370-P motherboard provides a solid foundation for your first build. This motherboard comes with loads of scope to grow with your ambitions. It is easy to expand and customize.

Even though it has lower specifications than what we found in our ASUS Prime Z370-A review, it covers all of the basics. It’s also one of the cheapest entries into Coffee Lake processors and the capable Z370 chipset.

This motherboard is perfect for DIY PC builders on a budget, aiming to use a single graphics card configuration.

Customer Reviews

“The ASUS Prime Z370-P motherboard provides absolutely everything that I want. Yes, it doesn’t have any RGB headers, but I don’t want a light show in my computer tower. There are shinier motherboards out there, but you won’t find one like the Z370-P with all the right features to enhance your gaming experience.”

5/5 Stars

The ASUS Prime Z370-P is a bare motherboard with all the essential features. It is well-built. My only complaint is the BIOS design which could have been made prettier.”
