ASUS Prime z270-A Review

The ASUS Prime z270-A is a leading motherboard in ASUS’s Prime range and is an overall great board for both casual and intense PC users. 

When we first picked up the ASUS Prime z270-A, our instinct was to compare it to other models in the Prime range such as the ASUS Prime z370-P and the ASUS prime x370-Pro. We were pleased to find that it did not disappoint.

ASUS Prime z270-A (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

The ASUS Prime z270-A is one of the best ASUS motherboards. It’s affordable for a mid-range board and has balanced features and specifications.

The z270-A supports both 6th and 7th Gen Intel core processors. It has 4 DDR4 memory slots that can handle up to 64GB at a speed of 3866Mhz. This is great news for gamers since you’ll be able to add up to 4 RAM cards to beef up your system’s memory. 

However, ASUS Prime z270-A lacks the high-end features found in most z-series motherboards. Instead, it’s a mainstream board intended for general users. 

This is apparent when comparing the z270-A with the ASUS Prime z370-A. The z370-A has more high-quality components and ports than the z270-A and there isn’t much of a price difference between the two.

Design and Features

The ASUS Prime z270-A sports a striking monochromatic design in shades of white and gray. The rear of the board holds the southbridge heatsink and a shroud that covers the I/O. Both components are clean white, while the memory slots and PCI sockets are gray. 

This gives the ASUS Prime z270-A a professional, businesslike appearance. 

The z270-A has RGB LEDs which allow you to customize the lighting around the audio circuits. This is a stunning feature, especially if you own a clear PC shell that allows the colors to shine through. 

It also has a header that can be used as a lightning strip if you’d like to add RGB fans. 

The four DDR4 slots, along with two PCI-Express x16 slots are able to run in dual x8 mode, giving users plenty of bandwidth to run two GPUs. There is an additional PCI-Express x16 x4 slot and four PCI-Express x1 sockets that you can use for smaller expansion cards. 

The z270 chipset also allows for fast storage and the board includes two M.2 sockets. There are also six SATA 3 connectors. 

While the board is full of hardware, it’s laid out well and never feels cramped. There is more than enough room to fiddle with sockets and other components so finding your way around the board shouldn’t be an issue. 

The board has been fitted with an impressive Realtek audio chip that’s been improved with additional hardware for headphones.

Performance

A motherboard’s performance is more about the components and their power consumption than the board itself. Keep in mind that the performance of the ASUS Prime z270-A in our system will be different from yours. 

The ASUS Prime z270-A performed amazingly on all benchmark tests without consuming too much power. When idle, the board consumes around 53 to 97W which is impressive given that most z270 boards need over 100W when stressed. 

The 3D Mark result of 6804 is average which is unsurprising given that, unlike the ASUS Prime z370-P, the z270-A isn’t optimized for gaming. 

Overclocking

The ASUS Prime sports an impressive 5-way Optimization feature which allows you to overclock with the push of a button. This feature is becoming a staple on ASUS boards like the Prime X299-Deluxe.

This is an amazing feature, especially if you’re unsure of how to tune your PC for overclocking but would like to try it out. 

It allows for perfect CPU performance and tailors your audio and network settings to your apps. This is great if you’re using your PC for video or audio editing, gaming, or entertainment.

Does the ASUS Prime z270-A have Wi-Fi?

Unfortunately, the ASUS Prime z270-A doesn’t feature any onboard wireless capabilities which is disappointing for a mid-range motherboard.

If you want to add Wi-Fi, you’ll need to purchase a wireless adapter card.

Does the ASUS Prime z270-A support 7th Gen processors?

The ASUS Prime z270 supports 7th Gen Intel Core processors. However, if you want to use this function, you’ll need a BIOS update and compatible drivers.

Out of the box, the ASUS Prime z270 supports Intel Optane Memory. Optane Memory modules accelerate the attached storage to reduce the load and boot times and make your PC more responsive.

Is the ASUS Prime z270-A a good motherboard?

Overall, the ASUS Prime z is a good motherboard. It is capable and has been shown to deliver in benchmark tests.

In our opinion, it meets the expectations that come along with a high-end motherboard and does not disappoint.

“The ASUS Prime z270 is a great motherboard. It has tons of features and handles overclocking without issue. There are also tons of advanced options if you really want to mess up your rig.

The board has a little RGB glow, and while I didn’t expect that, it was a stunning touch. This board really does everything you could want it to do, and it looks gorgeous doing it.

I have two tiny complaints though, but they aren’t serious enough for me to remove a star. The first has to do with the metal shield that goes in the back of the board is a bit of a pain to get lined up once you plug in all your components.

When I plugged in the connection for the front USB ports, I was forced to remove this piece, and the female plug on the motherboard popped right off. Luckily, the pins were straight and weren’t damaged so I was able to plug it back in but it could’ve gone horribly wrong.”

“Be advised! DO NOT update your BIOS to the 7.0.0 or the 8.0.0 updates on the ASUS website. I had an Ubuntu 16.04, and it was running just fine for several weeks. I then updated the BIOS because the 5.0.0 that came with my z270-A was not complete and it didn’t support extended PCIe addressing.

Updating the BIOS let me extend the PCIe addressing but left the board gigabit network interface inoperable.

Update: I bumped this review up a star because I was able to fix the problem after four days of pulling teeth and chugging coffee. When the Network interface goes out, it becomes much harder to update and install the software. I am sure that the root cause lies with ASUS.

However, the time I spent trying to fix this issue really doesn’t justify the cost of the motherboard for me. At least the board works well now.

To fix the problem, I refreshed the onboard e1000e intel network interface using a tool I got from the intel website.”
