ASUS Prime X370-Pro (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

What’s In the Box?

ASUS ensures that all the necessary cables and connectors are included so you can set up your ASUS Prime X370-Pro with ease.

The package includes a user guide detailing the steps to setting up your motherboard, a 20% off coupon for mod cables, four SATA cables, a driver CD, a high-bandwidth SLI bridge, a rear I/O shield to give you extra protection, a front panel adapter, and an M.2 screw to securely install any SSDs.

While we appreciate the inclusion of a driver CD, those drivers are now outdated, and newer versions have to be downloaded from the ASUS website.

Hardware and Storage

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro has an AMD AM4 socket meaning that it supports all AM4 CPUs. The downside to this is that you can only use RYZEN CPUs, making your choices limited.

The motherboard also makes use of DIGI+ VRM software. This provides accurate system power management and moderates power in real-time.

This automatically provides you with the most appropriate power levels for the CPU, the VGA card, hard drives, and fans. This saves on the power draw of your system and extends the life expectancy of your components.

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro has a total of four DDR4 Dual-Channel DIMM Slots with a maximum RAM capacity of 64GB. It has a maximum overclock rate of 3200mhz.

Eight SATA ports support RAID 0,1 and 10. This is two slots more than the ASUS Prime Z370-a. This is beneficial to those wanting extra storage and better performance by combining your drives into a single array.

The board also has a 32GB/s M.2 slot above the GPU should you make use of SSD storage. The slot placement is strategically done as other motherboards would have placed it below the GPU, which can lead to overheating.

Rear I/O

The rear I/O has a good number of ports but lacks the clear CMOS and BIOS flashback buttons found on the ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe.

The ports are shielded with stainless steel to prevent corrosion and extend their lifespan.

These ports include a PS/2 combo port for mouse and keyboard, a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C and Type-A port, five USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, an HDMI and DisplayPort, a Gigabit LAN port, and five Audio jacks with an Optical S/PDIF Output.

With all these ports and display options, ASUS has ensured that you’ll be looked after no matter which peripheral parts you want to use.

Excellent Audio

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro boasts a Realtek ALC1220 8-Channel 7.1 HD audio codec with up to 120 dB SNR DAC. This is an improvement from the Asus Prime Z270-a’s older S1220A codec.

The audio system is isolated from the rest of the motherboard to prevent any noise interference. It also has premium Japanese audio capacitors which are typically found in the higher-end motherboards.

We like that the audio system has separate layers for left and right tracks as this means both channels will deliver a consistent and equal quality of sound.

Staying Frosty

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro has a total of six fan headers: two for the CPU, two system fan headers, and two for a water-cooling system.

This provides you with enough headers to install a strong cooling solution that will increase the PC’s overall performance and extend your hardware’s lifespan.

A thermal sensor connector is located at the bottom of the motherboard. This allows you to plug a sensor directly into the motherboard and monitor the readings in the ASUS PC Probe Suite software.

Aesthetics and RGB

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro rocks a white and black design accented with grey streaks of brushed steel. Neutral colors make finding complementary aesthetic components for your rig an easy task.

However, those who want more color to their PC will be disappointed as the RGB is minimal, with only a single strip near the audio system and one addressable header.

Using the ASUS AURA SYNC software will give you access to a variety of colors and lighting modes for the RGB on your motherboard.

BIOS and Overclocking

The UEFI BIOS on this motherboard is like most of the Prime-series motherboards in that there are two selectable modes: EZ and Advanced.

The Tool tab in the Advanced Mode is where the overclocking takes place. Here, you can create an overclocking profile without the presence of an operating system.

If the BIOS looks scary to navigate, you can also use the five-way optimization software to overclock.

This allows you to overclock the CPU, GPU, and other components with ease instead of searching the BIOS for the correct settings.

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro has a ten-phase power design, an improvement from the six-phase design in the ASUS Prime a320m-K. This allows for steady overclocking of the CPU.

Common Questions about ASUS Prime X370-Pro

What’s so special about the reinforced PCIe slots?

These slots are reinforced to increase their rigidity and allow you to use high-end graphics cards that tend to be much heavier.

The reinforcement of these slots will provide support to these cards and extend their lifespan.

Can this motherboard run Linux?

The ASUS Prime X370-Pro has no problem running Linux. It can be booted from a CD or a flash drive.

Is this the best Prime-series motherboard?

Every motherboard in the prime series has its benefits but this is certainly one of the most affordable and feature-packed of the lot.

While motherboards like the ASUS Prime Z390-P have higher RAM capacities, the ASUS Prime X370-Pro has SLI support and additional SATA and PCIe slots when compared to the former.
