ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe is a premium motherboard that comes packed with amazing hardware capabilities and unique features.

Despite being more expensive than the ASUS Prime X370-Pro, the larger memory capacity and the extra RAM and PCIe slots make the X299 the more viable board.

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe is a motherboard that every gamer and content creator will find useful.

Hardware and Storage

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe boasts eight DDR4 DIMM slots with a 128GB maximum capacity. This makes the X299-Deluxe a fast, reliable, and powerful motherboard when paired with enough RAM.

There are a total of four PCIe slots to run graphics cards. The slots are evenly spaced and reinforced with steel to support the heavier cards.

ASUS has fitted the X299-Deluxe with three M.2 slots and an M.2 heatsink. The M.2 slots allow users to install SSDs. These drives are faster and use less power than mechanical HDDs.

An M.2 extension card is included, allowing for SSD speeds up to 128Gbps.

Unlike the ASUS Prime Z370-P, the X299-Deluxe has the added benefit of a U.2 port. Not only is this faster than the M.2 slots, but it also supports larger SSDs.

The board has a total of seven fan headers, two of which can be used for a powerful water-cooling system.

Good cooling ensures that hardware remains cool, leading to increased performance and a longer lifespan for the hardware.

If you require additional fan headers, ASUS has you covered. A fan extension card slots into the board and grants you additional PWM headers that allow you to add additional fans.

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe also supports the latest Intel Core X processors through the LGA2066 socket.

Rear I/O

A plethora of ports can be found on the rear I/O (Input/Output) of the ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe.

These include a total of four USB 3.1 ports supporting both Type-A and Type-C, Dual-band Wi-Fi, and Dual Intel LAN.

It supports USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and USB 3.1, generations one and two.

Two additional features are the BIOS flashback and clear CMOS buttons. These features allow you to reset or update your BIOS settings without needing a CPU, saving you the cost of purchasing one immediately.

A BIOS reset will come in handy when you can’t perform a Power-On-Self Test or diagnosis.

Gamers Paradise

Gamers and content creators requiring high-powered rendering systems will be right at home with the ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe.

This board supports multiple graphics cards using the two-way SLI bridge. This can massively enhance the performance and visuals of video games.

Gamers can enjoy up to 4K resolution without making any sacrifices to performance by downscaling the settings.

Audio

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe uses CrystalSound which is based on REALTEK’s S1220A chipset. This codec is also found in z-series boards like the ASUS Prime Z270-A.

It outputs crisp audio using its integrated amplifier and audio shielding.

Audiophiles will be happy to know this codec supports separate layers on the left and right PCB channels, delivering ample speaker power.

If the CrystalSound codec doesn’t do it for you, ASUS has included a Toslink optical connection and five HD audio jacks. This allows the user multiple options when deciding on an audio system for their rig.

Standout Features

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe brings with it new five-way optimization technology.

Overclocking the CPU, memory, GPU, and other components can be done with a click. It’s simple for those new to the concept and eliminates trial-and-error when adjusting voltages.

It also allows you to control your fans and water pumps using the UEFI BIOS.

Another impressive addition to the board is the LIVE-Dash OLED display. This allows you to view the frequency of the CPU, the speed of each fan, system temperatures, and a variety of other system information.

Board Design and RGB

The ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe has a clean black and white aesthetic with addressable RGB corners. Silver and grey heatsinks complement the board’s color palette.

Using ASUS’s Aura software, you can customize the RGB lighting on the board to your liking.

If the onboard lighting isn’t enough, you can connect additional LED strips to headers on the board or the included cable extension. These RGB settings can be controlled in the BIOS or using the Aura software.

Customer Reviews

“After having used this motherboard for a few months now, I have yet to encounter a problem. Everything works as intended and I am happy with what I received. The number of features and accessories that this board came with is incredible. I always thought of ASUS as the king of motherboards and was skeptical initially after having read comments regarding DOA boards, but after having received my motherboard and pushing it to its limits, they did not disappoint me. I highly recommend this motherboard.”

“Despite this new ASUS motherboard being some of the best the brand has to offer, I burned it out when I tried to plug in the power and USB connectors on the rear end. Unfortunately, one of the pins bent and came into contact with another burn causing it to fry out. Ever Since this happened, I haven’t been able to power it up again so I bought a new one. This board, despite my troubles with the previous board, is excellent. My only complaint and request would be to relocate the position of the USB 3.0 port as it was difficult and awkward to get my cable to connect to it”
