ASRock Z97 Extreme4 Review

The ASRock Z97 Extreme4 has been around for a while, and it’s garnered a bit of a reputation for itself. The Extreme range showcases balanced, well-priced motherboards that edge ever closer to the mid to high-end performance spectrum.

We saw how impressive the ASRock Z390 Pro4 motherboard was. Did ASRock take the same amount of care to develop the new Z97 Extreme4?

ASRock Z97 Extreme4 Motherboard (Our Review)

Overall Assessment

The overall layout of the Z97 Extreme4 looks good, with 3x PCIe x16 slots and a lonely M.2 socket. This motherboard is one of the first to go without standard PCI slots. It suits the competitive spirit of the Z97 chipset well.

Supported Processors

Our Z97 Extreme4 comes ready with support for 4th and 5th generation Intel Core processors. The LGA 1151 socket type gets excellent performance from the Z97 chipset.

The Z97 Extreme4 doesn’t run quite as fast as the ASRock Z270 Extreme4 does, but it’s still more competitive than other Z97 chipset motherboards.

Memory

Our first disappointment with the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 motherboard comes with its 4x DDR 3 RAM slots. This gives you only 32GB of maximum RAM on the board.

The RAM speeds also aren’t anything to write home about. It doesn’t take much to reach a peak performance of 3200MHz.

There are better alternatives around for the same price which allow you to install more RAM.

Peripherals

ASRock is one of the first motherboard developers to recognize the impact the M.2 port has on computer hardware. That’s why even the humble ASRock Z97 Extreme4 comes with one M.2.

M.2 ports give your drives lightning-fast data transfer speeds and are the perfect companion to any solid-state drive.

ASRock included 8x SATA3 connectors, which is a touch excessive. With today’s fantastic hard drives, you can quickly pick up several terabytes in one disk that will be difficult to fill up.

A fair number of USB ports and even one PS/2 port connect your external devices. There’s nothing too excessive and nothing that unnecessarily bloats your system or arbitrarily inflates the cost.

Users have access to pretty standard audio with 6-audio jacks. The jacks make installing your epic home theatre system much easier. No need to go with complicated and inefficient splitters.

Overclocking

ASRock didn’t advertise the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 as an overclocking system. Yet, if you work through ASRock’s sometimes confusing BIOS, you can get to some fantastic overclocking on this motherboard.

Graphics

Serious graphics addicts will be happy about the 3x PCIe 2.0 x16 slots on the Z97 Extreme 4. This gives you access to NVIDIA® Quad SLI and AMD 3-Way CrossFire technology for solid graphical processing.

Aesthetics

Sadly, the new ASRock Z97 Extreme4 isn’t nearly as beautiful as the ASRock Z370 Killer SLI/AC. But there are some superb blue heatsinks on the Z97 Extreme4.

Few motherboard manufacturers use blue in their designs, and we wish more did. The metallic blue is beautiful and much better-looking than what we saw in our ASRock B450m review.

Conclusion

The ASRock Z97 Extreme4 is slightly more expensive than other Z97 motherboards, yet it gives us a little more. This motherboard is perfect for newcomers to the PC world.

“I have had the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 motherboard for almost 5 years. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is that the USB ports sometimes randomly power off.”
